As the weekend crowds descend upon the CP+ expo here in Yokohama, Japan, I decided to roam the show floor to uncover some interesting tidbits, hands-on, and other news that may have gotten lost in the shuffle with this past week's bevy of announcements -- from both CP+ and WPPI!

Sony's 400mm f/2.8... exists!

First up will be of noted interest to Sony sports and wildlife photographers: the FE 400mm f/2.8 G Master lens exists! Displayed under glass at Sony's booth, this new super-telephoto lens, which was announced as in-development back in October 2017, will soon reach eager photographers sometime this summer, according to a Sony representative I spoke with.

Sony's previously announced 400mm F2.8 GM OSS received a full introduction today. The pro-grade lens will ship in September for $12,000, and aims to deliver superior autofocus and handling. The lens is a (relatively speaking) light 2.7kg / 6.4lb, and Sony claims it's well-balanced for monopod or even handheld shooting. The company also says that its FE 400mm takes advantage of two new linear motors with 5x faster tracking performance on ... Read more »

There could be no better commemoration of Photoshop’s 25th anniversary than the trove of unretouched Beyoncé photos that leaked online yesterday. The photos appeared on a fan site called Beyoncé World on Wednesday morning. Within an hour, Beyoncé World had pulled them down, apparently alarmed at fans’ genuine outrage. These fans were angry not that Beyoncé had been Photoshopped so dramatically — as is often the case with these things — but that someone had dared expose her for who she actually is. Laugh lines. Blemishes. Bits of friz. All the makings of a real, human person. The problem is that 25 years after Photoshop launched, we’d much prefer manipulations of reality to reality itself.

It can be hard to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to design trends. Design techniques come and go with the seasons, but it’s important to try to keep on top of the latest design crazes, so you don’t get left in the dust. The easiest way to do this? Read some 2018 design trends articles.

Recently, I read Top Graphic Design Trends 2018: The Ultimate Guide which is an excellent source of information about current trends, upcoming trends, and trends that are passing. The author does a great job of explaining how some new visual styles are offshoots of previous popular aesthetics and others are opposing current design movements.

Sometimes reading design trend articles can make you feel like you’re on a hamster wheel – running circles, getting nowhere, and chasing visual trends to no avail. Other times they can excite and inspire you to try new things and experiment. It’s not crucial that you’re ahead of the pack ... Read more »

The beginnings

The history of the digital camera began with Eugene F. Lally of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. When he wasn't coming up with ways to create artificial gravity he was thinking about how to use a mosaic photosensor to capture digital images. His 1961 idea was to take pictures of the planets and stars while travelling through space, in order to help establish the astronauts' position. Unfortunately, as with Texas Instrument employee Willis Adcock's filmless camera (US patent 4,057,830) in 1972, the technology had yet to catch up with the concept.

There are lenses which are traditionally considered to be "portrait lenses," such as fast 50mm, 85mm and 105mm primes. There are, of course, many other lenses you can use to capture nice portraits, such as 24-70mm and 70-200mm f/2.8 zooms. Tony and Chelsea Northrup decided to do a portrait shoot with a very different kind of lens, a Nikon 600mm f/4super telephoto prime.

How does this $12,000 lens stack up as a portrait prime? Well, we know that it's a very sharp lens, so that won't be an issue, but as we can see very early in the video below, there are some challenges. Firstly, it’s not easy to handhold. Secondly, you need to be so far away from your subject that communication can be challenging. Obviously this portrait shoot is mostly for the fun and novelty of it, but it's worthwhile to consider non-traditional lenses for portraiture. For example ... Read more »

Young bank clerk George Eastman founded a company in 1880 to manufacture photographic dry plates in Rochester, New York. He obtained financing and engaged in research with a goal of simplifying photography. His breakthrough, in 1883, was the creation of film in roll form, for the first time allowing multiple exposures with a single loading. In 1888 he created a small plain black box camera that had a pushbutton to take pictures and a key to advance the film. Sold pre-loaded with a roll of 100 shots, this was the first Kodak camera. There was no way to focus and no viewfinder; the user held the box and aimed it at the desired subject. After using all 100 exposures, the photographer sent the whole camera to the Eastman Company in Rochester for developing, printing, and reloading at a cost of $10. The product's first advertising slogan, "You press the button - we do the rest," reflected this process.

The name "Kodak" had no meaning; Eastman created the brand name for reasons he summarized in his British patent application: "First. It is short. Sec ... Read more »

How to Find Your Style as a Photographer

When I was starting in photography, I kept hearing peers and educators talking about their photographic style. I was totally lost. I had no idea what my style was, because as desperate as I was to define it, I hadn't yet discovered it. Discovered is the wrong word. My style wasn't yet.

In a lot of ways, I may be the last person qualified to talk about style. I wear the same thing every day: black v-neck, jeans, black shoes, hair in a ponytail, and an ivy cap. For events where I need to look more professional, I throw a suit jacket on top, and people are genuinely impressed that I dressed up (I love working in a field where you can get away with thi ... There's a lot more to compositing than just getting a perfect cutout. Here are some golden tips by Unmesh Dinda of Piximperfect on how to get a seamless blend.

When first getting started with compositing it's easy to overlook some slight exposure or color differences because, at first, getting the selection spot on takes a lot of practice and trial and error of different techniques. When one wants to progress and bring their A-game to compositing, however, one has to learn how look a bit deeper to really make the image believable. In this video, Dinda does a great job at explaining how to get around some of the trickier problems.
